We scout locations. These photos were taken with my favorite scouts in tow checking out Boyette Springs Park in Riverview, FL for some maternity photos. We went to the location the day before at the approximate time of the session to check the light, to get ideas and to prepare for the session. We scout whenever we can because the more you know about how the light could react at your location --the more creative freedom you have on the day of the session. You can plan to be at a certain spot at a certain time in a specific way to capture the moment. I have taken a few courses on light studies this past summer. I recently (last week) finished a course on editing photographs that were taken in harsh light conditions when there are shadows on the face. Also over the summer, I finished a 3 week course on contract and composition. This week, I finished a book on dynamic model posing. It talks about how to think of the body as a frame of triangles and squares and the rules of posing so that you are flattering the body. I'm taking my time on the Handbook for Portrait photographers and I may start traveling with that copy because it has an entire chapter on "problem areas" and how to pose for them. :)
The more I learn about who I am as a photographer, the more I realize that it feels good to bless people with photos that capture them beautifully in gorgeous settings. I prefer the close up. I like clean lines and a lot of contrast. I also like hazy and dreamy photography. When I edit, I allow the photograph determine the feel. For these edits below, I was artsy and creative with the matte.
